The Department of Justice alleges Rodriguez demonstrated hatred through his words and actions, including violent statements on social media targeting Israelis.

The new charges come as part of an ongoing investigation, with a grand jury recently convened to consider the case. The Department of Justice has left open the possibility of seeking the death penalty if Rodriguez is convicted. The families of the victims have expressed their gratitude to authorities for pursuing the case.

The Department of Justice is adding two federal counts of hate crime resulting in death. To his case, US attorney for the District of Columbia, Janine Pirro, explained why he is facing new charges. He demonstrated this hatred through his words, death to Israel and his violent actions against Iran and Sarah and their co-workers from the Israeli embassy. He also posted one of his postings on social media. Please, please, please God, please vaporize every Israeli. I want to bring in CBS News Justice reporter Jake Rosen for the latest. Jake, thank you for joining us today. You were at that press conference this morning. So what are your takeaways from Pirro's remarks? Well, there were a couple. I think the first of which is that we knew Mugo that this investigation was still ongoing despite the fact that Rodriguez had initially obviously been charged in less than a day after that May 21st attack for the murders of that couple for firearms charges. Obviously by by shooting people in the streets of DC, he also was now charged with two counts of federal hate crimes that resulted in death which we knew the there was an investigation ongoing on potential terrorism charges. And hate crime charges. We know obviously a grand jury. We reported earlier this week had been convened to hear these charges. There's also a new provision Mugo in this new superseding indictment in which the Department of Justice leaves the door open to the death penalty. Jeanine Pirro did not rule it out, but we've seen the Justice Department go and take that step for certain defendants that they believe should be eligible for it should they be convicted on all charges and again, that is still on the table in this case. Certainly a new important development. Pirro also said she spoke to both of the families of this and both of them expressed their thanks to her and also just the Department of Justice for continuing to follow up on the story.
