While Putin has expressed willingness to meet with Zelensky in principle, he noted that the necessary conditions for such a meeting have not been met. Trump has also imposed higher tariffs on India for purchasing Russian oil and suggested similar measures could be taken against other countries.

Trump had previously set a deadline for Russia to agree to peace in Ukraine or face new sanctions by Friday. He was asked on Thursday whether that deadline still stood. It's going to be up to him. We're going to see what he has to say. Trump said his meeting with Putin was not conditional on the Russian leader first meeting with Ukraine's Vladimir Zelensky. Does Putin have to meet with Zelensky in order and before you and Putin have to meet? No, no. Zelensky spoke on Thursday to European leaders. In a post on X afterwards, he said Europe must be involved in the peace process. He added that various possible bilateral and trilateral meeting formats had been discussed on a call with Trump the day prior, and that, quote, Ukraine is not afraid of meetings and expects the same brave approach from the Russian side. Meanwhile, Putin, when asked on Thursday about the possibility of meeting Zelensky, said he was willing in principle, but the conditions for a face-to-face with the Ukrainian leader were far from being met. Russia's deputy UN ambassador said he was not aware of any planned meeting between the two leaders. Trump has threatened new sanctions from Friday against Russia and countries that buy its exports, unless Putin agrees to end the three-and-a-half-year conflict. Earlier this week, Trump imposed higher tariffs against India for buying Russian oil. He said at the time that similar additional duties may follow on China, the other top buyer of Russian crude oil. It was not clear if he would announce further steps should his Friday ceasefire deadline expire without a deal.
