CNBC's Robert Frank breaks down the massive wealth of the Walton family, the heirs behind the Walmart fortune.

The Walton family, founders of Walmart, have seen their collective wealth rise to over $450 billion, more than tripling since Doug McMillan took over as CEO in 2014. The family remains the richest in America, with major investments managed through Walton Enterprises and individual family offices.

Key members, including Jim, Rob, Alice, and Lucas Walton, each hold significant individual fortunes and oversee diverse investments ranging from sports franchises to sustainable agriculture and holistic health. The family's influence in Walmart has also grown, expanding their company voting block to eleven members as they prepare for future generations.

Walmart's First Family: The numbers behind the wealth

That's such a good picture to share. I don't know what you're doing. You're like secret agent man. Give you a number, take away your name. With Walmart CEO Doug McMillan about to step down from the head job at the retailer after more than a decade, taking a look at the wealth of Walmart's first family. This is an interesting calculation to do. Robert Frank joins us now with more. Yesterday we were just talking about in one man's life, Sam Walton, to start that you know in Arkansas into so many employees, so many shareholders, but the Walton family, you have it just a total number of? Yes. You do? Yes. Of how much wealth was created for that family and then since McMillan. Since McMillan and that's the key here. He has done so well for this company and they have done so well as a family in keeping that professional management. So the wealth of the Walton family has more than tripled since Doug McMillan became CEO in 2014. The heirs to Walmart founder Sam Walton are now collectively worth over four hundred and fifty billion dollars. That makes them of course the richest family in America. Some say the richest in the world. Sam's children, that's Jim, Rob and Alice are each worth over one hundred and thirty five billion dollars. Grandson Lucas Walton is worth forty eight billion dollars. Now at the center of their wealth and investing is Walton Enterprises. That's the umbrella family office that holds most of their forty five percent ownership of Walmart shares. With a staff of around three hundred people, the Walton Enterprises portfolio includes over four billion dollars of standard ETF and bonds. But the family's biggest investment bets are left to their individual family offices for each member. While Rob Walton's Madrone Capital for instance was the largest investor in StubHub before that company went public this year. He also of course owns the Denver Broncos. Lucas Walton is investing in sustainable agriculture and clean energy. Alice Walton's foundation of course just created the Heartland Whole Health Institute that's focusing on holistic health. And Jim Walton remains chairman of Arvest Bank Group, that's the Arkansas bank. Now as they prepare for the third generation, the Waltons have also expanded their votes in the company from three people to eleven family members in that voting block.
