The International Criminal Court Tuesday handed down a sentence of 20 years to a Sudanese militia leader for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed during the country's civil war two decades ago.

Ali Mohamed Ali Abdel Rahman, a senior figure in Sudan's Janjaweed militia, was convicted by the International Criminal Court for crimes including rape, torture, and murder during the Darfur conflict over two decades ago. The court found him responsible for atrocities committed as part of the Sudanese government's crackdown on an insurrection in the region.

The United Nations estimates that between 2003 and 2004, around 300,000 people were killed and 2.5 million displaced in Darfur. Rights groups have described the violence as ethnic cleansing and genocide. ICC prosecutors are now seeking additional arrest warrants related to the ongoing conflict in Sudan, which has resulted in at least 40,000 deaths since 2023.

Back in October, he became the first person to be convicted by the International Criminal Court for crimes during Sudan's previous civil war more than two decades ago. Ali Mohamed Ali Abdel Rahman was found guilty of a series of offences, including rape, torture and murder. He was a senior official in the notorious Janjaweed militia, used by the Sudanese government to quash an insurrection. Fighting broke out in the country's Darfur region when non-Arab tribes took up arms against the Arab-dominated government, which they accused of running an apartheid regime. In response, the government unleashed the Janjaweed, a force formed of various nomadic tribes, which launched a brutal crackdown. According to the United Nations, some 300,000 people were killed and 2.5 million displaced from 2003 to 2004. Rights groups called it deliberate ethnic cleansing, as reports of atrocities multiplied, including the mass rape and murder of civilians. What happened in 2003 is a genocide. ICC prosecutors are seeking to issue fresh arrest warrants linked to the current war in Sudan, which broke out between Sudan's army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces in 2023. According to the World Health Organization, the conflict has claimed at least 40,000 lives and displaced millions.
