An immigrant advocacy group has released new video of a federal detention facility in New York City, where detainees allegedly only receive one meal a day and have to deal with overcrowding. Camilo Montoya-Galvez has more.

A recently released video shows the conditions inside a federal immigration holding facility in New York City, where migrants are reportedly held for extended periods without beds, showers, and with only one meal a day. The Department of Homeland Security describes the site as a temporary processing center, but government data indicates some detainees have spent up to eight days there, with as many as 200 people held at a time.

Reports from detainees describe overcrowded and substandard conditions, including limited access to food, water, and basic hygiene. While lawmakers have been denied access to inspect the facility, the Department of Homeland Security has strongly denied allegations of poor conditions, stating that claims of overcrowding or inadequate care are categorically false.

We begin with a rare look inside one of the facilities being used to hold migrants detained by ICE. New video appears to show the conditions on the 10th floor of a federal immigration court in New York City, through which hundreds of migrants have passed, some being held for days on end, allegedly without beds, showers, and only one meal a day. Our Camila Montoya Galvez joins me now. Camila, what else do we know about this facility? Well, John, the Department of Homeland Security says that this is only a temporary holding center to process people briefly who are awaiting deportation, not a long-term detention center. But we have reviewed government data that indicates that some detainees have spent as many as eight days in that detention center. As many as 200 people were held there at any given moment in June. And so this is becoming a long-term detention center. However, the administration is not allowing lawmakers to inspect the facility, arguing that it is not a detention center by law. They have access to ICE detention centers. Migrant detainees at this facility are reporting poor and substandard conditions, including limited access to food and water, no ability to take showers, and also having to sleep on the floor amid hot temperatures and overcrowded conditions. The notion that it's temporary suggests that in the longer-term facilities, conditions are much different. And they will have more services. And they'll have more services. So based on your experience and all the reporting you've done, is this the exception or the standard in terms of care? We are seeing reports of substandard conditions across the country. Right now, ICE is holding 57 people in detention centers across the country. That is a near-record high, as the administration aggressively expands this. 57,000. 57,000. Yes. Sorry, John. People in detention centers across the country. That is a near-record, and it is part of that broader mass deportation campaign. I should underscore that the Department of Homeland Security has strongly disputed any claims of poor conditions, saying in part, any claim that there is overcrowding or subprime conditions at ICE detention facilities are categorically false.
