After the U.S. military operation that led to the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, Venezuelans are waiting to see what happens next. At the border with neighbouring Colombia, FRANCE 24's team spoke with them to see how they feel about the near future.

France 24 reports from the Colombia-Venezuela border, where the main crossing at Cucuta remains calm despite recent political upheaval following the capture of Nicolas Maduro by U.S. authorities. Colombian security has been reinforced at the border, and people continue to cross for daily needs, such as shopping.

Venezuelans interviewed expressed mixed reactions, with some hopeful for change after Mrs Rodriguez was sworn in as interim president, while others voiced concern about the country's future. The community is also reacting to recent protests in Caracas, reports of gunfire attributed to anti-air defences, and statements from U.S. officials, which have heightened anxiety among both pro- and anti-government supporters.

Venezuelans wait to see what happens after Maduro capture by U.S.

For a look at the situation on the ground now, here's France 24's James André on the border between Colombia and Venezuela. Well, the city of Cucuta, where I'm standing, is the main land crossing between Colombia and Venezuela. There is a bridge across the river here that separates both countries and, well, this Monday we were able to witness with the France 24 team the fact that, well, things are going smoothly for now at this border, where indeed the Colombians have reinforced security, setting up some armoured vehicles. We saw people crossing in both directions, including Venezuelans, who'd come to Colombia to buy some groceries. When we spoke to them, well, some of them were indeed very happy to see a change in the country, though they were also telling us, when Mrs Rodriguez was sworn in as the interim president, that they were hoping that things would eventually move on. These are people, of course, who are opposed to Nicolas Maduro, telling us that, for one, for example, who is a shop owner, telling us that he was ready to go through an economic crisis if that meant real change in the country. Here, everybody, obviously, is watching what's going on in Venezuela, including, for example, the pro-Maduro protests that took place today in Caracas, but also the shots that were fired at the end of the afternoon on Monday, which, you know, created a sense of panic. But afterwards, well, the authorities confirmed that it was anti-air defences firing at an undefined and unidentified drone. Of course, people here are also monitoring what's going on in the United States with the latest declarations of Donald Trump, who has threatened the president of Colombia, with people worried, worried to see what might happen to their country, people who are pro-government, telling us that they feel that the government's been democratically elected and the president can't be removed, saying that this is Trump gesticulating, but others, indeed, telling us they are very worried.

U.S. forces have boarded a Venezuela-linked sanctioned oil tanker in the North Atlantic after pursuing it for weeks. The U.S. military also announced the seizure of a sanctioned tanker ship in the Caribbean Sea, the second vessel taken by American forces on Wednesday.
