The suspension follows a period of increased US military activity in the Caribbean, including airstrikes on suspected drug smuggling boats, which has strained relations between the US and several South American countries. Trinidad and Tobago, however, has welcomed the US warship and expressed support for US partnership, with its Prime Minister stating the country does not require Venezuelan gas.

Faced with the threat of seeing Trinidad and Tobago become the aircraft carrier of the American empire against Venezuela, I have approved the immediate suspension of all energy agreements between our countries. In the past two months, the Trump administration has launched a series of airstrikes against boats suspected of smuggling drugs in the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. The campaign has driven a wedge between the U.S. and many South American countries, including Venezuela, which has denounced a plot to oust its president, Nicolas Maduro. One of the few Latin American countries to back the U.S. airstrikes, Trinidad and Tobago said Monday it welcomed the warship's presence in its waters. The U.S. being a superior power to Trinidad and Tobago, we will always look to see how best larger nations can help smaller ones like Trinidad and Tobago. The Gravely is here in furtherance of that request, and we welcome them being here. It demonstrates that the U.S. continues to be a very strong partner with Trinidad and Tobago. A staunch Trump ally, Trinidad's Prime Minister said Monday her country didn't need Venezuela's gas and that she would not give in to any blackmail by Caracas.
