While a recent trade deal lowered tariffs on most European goods to 15%, steel and aluminium from the EU remain subject to the 50% tariffs imposed during the Trump administration. Lutnick clarified that the U.S. is not seeking the removal of digital rules, but rather a more balanced application to benefit American tech companies.

U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has said that Washington can reduce duties on E.U. steel and aluminium, but only if the Europeans agree to ease the implementation of digital rules, following a meeting in Brussels on Monday. We set a baseline foundation, a trade agreement that resets trade between us in a reciprocal and fair way, and now it's our job both to implement it and then to work on the next version of it to grow and to build those relationships going forward. Lutnick did not call to remove the rules, but did say the way in which they are applied should be more balanced for American tech companies. Brussels is desperately seeking to obtain a reduction of the 50% tariffs that the Trump administration imposed on European aluminium and steel in June. The E.U. and U.S. clinched a trade deal in July that resulted in a 15% tariff on most European goods. But E.U. steel and aluminium remain stuck at the much higher rate, despite the deal.
