Ohio's U.S. Senator Bernie Moreno has joined President Donald Trump in asking for tech giant Intel's CEO to resign due to his reported ties to the Chinese government.

U.S. Senator Bernie Moreno has called for an investigation into potential fraud related to Intel's delayed semiconductor manufacturing plant in Ohio. The project, which was expected to create thousands of construction jobs and boost economic development, has faced repeated delays, with the completion date now pushed into the 2030s. 

Concerns have also been raised about Intel CEO Lipu Tan's investments in Chinese companies with government ties. While some state officials remain optimistic about Intel's commitment, others, including union leaders and lawmakers, express frustration over unfulfilled promises and the use of taxpayer funds. The state government has indicated that it cannot reclaim its investment in the project until at least 2029.

We've told you how a giant Intel manufacturing plant planned in central Ohio has been stalled now for years so Ohio lawmakers are getting involved now. Our Columbus Bureau reporter Morgan Trowell learned some have hope, others say this project is dead. Delay after delay after delay. Unrealistic expectation that they would be producing chips in the summer of 2025. And that's thousands of Ohio construction jobs stalled. Ones that union leader Dorsey Hager says tech giant Intel promised when they announced they would be building their massive semiconductor manufacturing facility. They talked about, you know, ramping up, uh, to close to, I think, 8000 construction workers at the peak. We have close to 1200 people out there right now. And that's hundreds of millions of Ohio taxpayer dollars that state Senator Bill DeMora says are being unused by Intel. We're never getting the jobs we were promised. We're never getting the economic development we were promised. All that's happened is we spent a lot of state money on infrastructure and now we're gonna boondoggle. And after years of the company's stock plummeting plus repeated layoffs, Intel has moved their expected completion date from 2025 to the 2030s. Still, Lieutenant Governor Jim Trestle says he believes Intel will stay true to its original promise of the multi billion dollar investment. Nothing's easy, especially in a changing industry like the one they're in. But they've already made a lot of investment. What does it say to the Ohioans who are waiting for this? Taxpayer dollars have gone to something that does not exist yet. No, I think that's fair and frustrating for sure. Sometimes the progress doesn't happen like you'd like it to. But another issue is causing concern from other Republicans. Both Senators John Husted and Bernie Moreno have raised red flags about the new Intel CEO Lipu Tan. Reuters reported that this year Tan invested hundreds of millions in Chinese companies that have ties to their government. Both President Donald Trump and Moreno have asked for him to resign. Moreno adds that the project needs to be completed and a fraud investigation should be initiated. Obviously, if someone's part of the C. C. P. And it's a problem in my mind. Um, and so, but I think you have to be fair until facts come out. We reached out to Intel but didn't hear back. However, their spokesperson has told us for years that their commitment to Ohio remains strong. But Demora doesn't believe it's happening. So really, you think Intel is dead? Intel's dead. We're never gonna see Intel. The governor's team told us they won't be able to claw back money from the state's investment into the Intel project until at least 2029 at the Ohio State House.
