On March the 7th, the U.S. Embassy in Moscow issued a warning of a possibly imminent attack in the city. It said its personnel were monitoring reports that extremists had plans to target large gatherings, including concerts. The warning would be dismissed by the Kremlin, with President Vladimir Putin calling it provocative — a propaganda attempt to scare Russians. Let me remind you of the recent, frankly provocative statements by a number of official Western structures about the possibility of terrorist attacks in Russia. All this resembles outright blackmail and an intention to intimidate and destabilize our society. The U.S. media reported that since November, there's been intelligence that ISIS Khorasan, the Islamic State group's affiliate in and around Afghanistan, planned attacks on Russia. This month, the country's authorities have carried out at least three operations against Islamic State cells around the country, according to state media. With Russia advancing its footholds in Africa and the Middle East, experts say it comes as no surprise that the country is being targeted. There have been attacks on Russian soil as early as 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, and just two weeks ago an attack against a synagogue in Moscow was foiled. A Russian national who fought in Syria was arrested in Poland. Another Russian national affiliated with the Islamic State group, working in a nuclear facility, was arrested in Turkey. So there are recruits, there's animosity, and a war that goes back several years. U.S. intelligence says there's no reason to doubt the ISIS claims of responsibility, as Russia's fight against ISIL in the Middle Eastern region has made them a target.
