The accident, involving the Elevador da Gloria funicular, impacted people from at least 10 countries. Early reports indicate a snapped steel cable may have caused the derailment, though investigations into the technical and potential criminal causes are ongoing. Local residents have established a memorial at the site, and the city remains in mourning.

Authorities in Portugal are expected to release a preliminary technical report today into Wednesday's deadly streetcar crash in Lisbon. At least 16 people were killed and 21 others injured in the accident, and the State Department has confirmed that a U.S. citizen was among the dead. CBS News foreign correspondent Ramiro Nascencio has more from the Portuguese capital. Yes, and today we are getting the clearest picture yet of the international scope of this tragedy. 37 people killed or wounded across at least some 10 countries from North America to here in Europe and as far away as Asia. And those two carriages that make up this funicular, the Elevador da Gloria, are now gone. Overnight and away from most onlookers, workers hoisted those cars up and drove them out on flatbed trucks. Now we can only see the cobblestone path that's left in its wake that was torn up by that carriage that hurtled out of control and that killed those 16 passengers. On the sidewalk here is a growing makeshift memorial of flowers, of balloons, of candles, and of messages of condolences over this loss. And you mentioned one American is among the dead here, confirmed by the State Department, a spokesperson in a statement saying, we can confirm that a U.S. citizen was killed in the tragic funicular derailment in Lisbon. Our staff here and in the U.S. are working to provide assistance to the victim, singular here, and their family. Now we look ahead, and there are several investigations that are ongoing into the cause of this tragedy. We're expecting a preliminary report from Portugal's Air and Rail Accident Investigation Unit later today in terms of the technical cause. Local media have already reported that there was a frayed steel cable up higher on the hill that had snapped. We also spoke to one of the country's top engineering experts who said it had snapped. But the open question is, why? Why did the manual and automatic brakes not kick in? He suggested perhaps the 20 tons of metal and people on that carriage was just too heavy. Then, in 45 days from now, Portugal's investigative police force will then issue its report on any potential, potential criminality. Right now, Lisbon and its three million residents are under its second day of mourning heading into tomorrow. Back to you. All right. Rami Inocencio, thank you.
