Israel justified its recognition by referencing past atrocities against Somaliland’s people, specifically the Isaaq genocide, while Somalia’s ambassador countered by accusing Israel of ongoing violence in Gaza. Somalia currently serves as an elected member of the Security Council and holds the presidency for January, giving it the authority to revisit the issue.

Somalia called on Israel to rescind its recognition of its breakaway region of Somaliland during an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council. And it just so happens it holds the presidency of the council for the month of January, meaning that if they want to raise the issue of Somaliland again, they certainly will have the power to do so.
