However, the report also notes that the pace of transition remains uneven. Africa accounted for less than 2% of new renewable energy capacity installed last year, with the UN attributing this to the high cost of capital in the global south. The UN has called on major technology firms to power all data centres with 100% renewables by 2030 and to use water sustainably in cooling systems.

Councils still warn that the transition to renewables is not happening fast enough, especially in regions like Africa. The continent represented less than 2% of the new green energy capacity installed last year. The UN blamed the high cost of capital for the global south.
