Ukrainian teenager Yelisei Mamonov dreams of attending his country's top technical university. For now, he is gaining valuable experience at a family-run workshop making remote-controlled stretchers to rescue wounded troops as Russia's invasion continues. 

Yelisei works alongside his father, Dmytro, a former factory manager, and his 10-year-old sister, Yezenia. The 14-year-old has already contributed to the production of dozens of these devices. The Mamonov family fled Slovyansk shortly after the invasion began and set up their workshop in central Ukraine. 

Yezenia plays a critical role in the production process. Initially, she would assist by holding the engine while Yelisei checked the components. Now, she is capable of connecting the electronics on her own. Business is flourishing, according to Oksana, wife and mother, who has joined the effort to manage orders for frontline troops.

The project, named Tank Bureau, has drawn criticism from some family members who feel the children are missing out on a normal childhood. Oksana dismisses this, believing her children will be grateful for the skills they are acquiring. As drones and other high-tech devices gain importance in the war, top officials have highlighted the need to boost domestic manufacturing. 

Dmytro aims for their stretchers to be as ubiquitous as first-aid kits, which requires mass production and a solid plan for significant advancements. The family’s project has received funding from a Ukrainian defense tech accelerator operated by the government.

We need to grow our production. We want as many of these at the front line as possible, so that every unit, every company has one. The Mamonovs fled the eastern city of Slovyansk shortly after Moscow's February 2022 invasion and set up production in central Ukraine, away from the threat of cluster munitions that once rained down on their neighborhood. Yezenia says she now plays a vital role on the production line. I used to just stand there and hold the engine while Yelisey was checking it all out. But I have now learned how to do it myself, and now I can connect the electronics on my own. Business is booming, according to wife and mother Oksana, who was also pulled into the project known as Tank Bureau to field orders for front-line troops. She brushes off criticism from family members and others that her kids are missing out on an ordinary childhood. I think that, on the contrary, when they grow up, they'll be thankful because they'll have more skills than others. Drones and other high-tech devices are now playing a pivotal role in the war, and top officials have recognized the need to step up domestic manufacturing. Dimitro wants his family's stretchers to be as widespread as first-aid kits. That means mass production. That means we need a proper plan. In order to reach this, we need a radical leap forward. As of now, I'm not able to do that. I need to work on improving them. The Mamenov's effort has been funded by a Ukrainian defence tech accelerator run by the government.
