A Ukrainian woman, Victoria Karol, was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during a routine green card interview in San Diego. After several days in custody without contact with her family or attorney, she was released and reunited with her husband, Viktor Karol. 

Despite her release, Victoria's immigration status remains uncertain as she now faces a pending removal proceeding. Her attorney has filed motions to terminate the proceedings, and the couple continues to pursue her green card application.

I just want her to be out of that and finish the green card processing and get back to our lives. One man's hopes became reality. We first spoke to Viktor Karol last week when his Ukrainian wife, Victoria, was taken into custody by ICE during her green card interview. We've been covering cases like this in the past week here in the county. This week, Victoria was released and reunited with her husband. ABC 10 News reporter Tali Latoy followed through with a couple about the experience they call torturous. It's a bittersweet reunion for Viktor and Victoria, or Vika. After being detained by ICE for days, she says nothing was worse than the first three days in custody, with no contact with her loved ones or even her attorney. Both of them tell me they are exhausted by this process after following all the rules and filing all the paperwork, and the fight for Vika's green card is still in motion. It's been an exhausting week for Viktor Karol, but now his wife is back by his side. The last time I spoke with him, his wife Victoria, or Vika, wasn't here after she was detained by ICE during her routine green card interview. There's not even any violation or breaking or any immigration rules, nothing, you know. But now they are both sharing their experience. You can never be ready for this kind of experience. And we can finally hear directly from Vika, her husband helping translate what happened. It's hard to describe it, she's still in, feels like she's in shock. She says the worst was the beginning, especially how she was treated. It's not clear why you need to use handcuffs and, you know, ankle cuffs. They don't listen to you. She was telling them about her visas, but they don't listen. When someone is detained by ICE, initial contact is restricted until they are processed and moved to a detention facility. For three days, she was left in the dark, unable to reach out to her loved ones or her lawyer. For three days, I was not able to go see her, talk through whatever legal allegations were being made against her for why she was removable from the country. Despite being reunited with her family now, her situation remains unresolved. Why did she go to prison and to this three days of torture in DHS? The couple tells me they were given no reason for her release, but she now has a pending removal proceeding that her attorney is fighting. I have filed motions to terminate those proceedings.
