The shake-up on Thursday comes after months of speculation about a rift between Zelensky and Army Chief General Valery Zelushny. We spoke openly today about what needs to change in the army. Urgent changes, Zelensky said in his nightly address. In a statement, Zelensky named Colonel General Alexander Sirsky as the new head of the armed forces. It's a huge gamble at a time when Russian forces are gaining the upper hand in the war. Some call Zelushny the Iron General, and many Ukrainians see him as a national hero. His dismissal could deal a blow to morale and potentially backfire politically for Zelensky. Polling suggests Zelushny has more of the public's trust than the president. Zelensky's statement says he asked the general to stay on his team. For his own part, in his own statement, Zelushny said the tasks of 2024 are different from those of two years ago. Everyone must change and adapt to the new realities, he said. Sirsky takes over during a period of deep uncertainty. The chief is waiting for vital military aid from the United States that has been delayed for months by political infighting.

The Pentagon is urging Japan and Australia to clarify what role they would play if the U.S and China went to war over Taiwan, the Financial Times is reporting. According to the newspaper, the reported request caught Japan and Australia 'off-guard'.
