Emergency crews throughout the United Kingdom have started the cleanup process after Storm Eowyn caused significant damage. The storm, characterized by record-breaking winds, resulted in at least one fatality and left more than a million people without power in Ireland and Scotland. Authorities issued a red weather warning, indicating a danger to life, and advised people to shelter in place as the storm progressed.

Storm Eowyn initially struck the Republic of Ireland, where it recorded the strongest wind speeds in 80 years, causing considerable damage to properties and infrastructure. The severe weather battered Northern Ireland, leading to the destruction of a film studio roof associated with the production of the TV series Game of Thrones. In addition, regions across Scotland, Northern England, and Wales reported extensive damage to properties, disrupted rail lines, and uprooted trees.

Residents in affected areas have described the storm as the worst they have experienced in decades. The Irish Premier, Micheál Martin, referred to the destruction as unprecedented. The storm also claimed the life of a man in Ireland when a falling tree hit his car. Power companies are currently working to restore electricity to impacted homes and businesses, while weather warnings for strong winds and heavy rain remain in force.

Well this was Storm Eowyn. It came with a rare red weather warning meaning a danger to life. People were told to shelter in place on Thursday into Friday. Now it hit the Republic of Ireland first. Take a look at this footage. Attempts are being made to collect wind speed data. That's on the coast of County Clare in Ireland and it gives you a real sense of just how strong those winds were. Ireland actually recorded its highest wind speed in 80 years. The storm also took hold in Northern Ireland here ripping off the roof of this film studio where the TV series Game of Thrones was made. And in Scotland as well as parts of Northern England and Wales we've seen widespread property damage as well as destroyed rail lines, power cables down and trees uprooted. Take a listen to these people in Ireland and Scotland who experienced the storm. It was the worst storm we've seen since we moved to Galway 25 years ago. So very very frightening I'd say between 2 and 4 a.m. last night. It was particularly bad. Certainly wouldn't want to see too many of them. It's very apocalyptic up there. There's not like one person. All the barriers are down and bins everywhere. There was a broken bench. A broken bench. The Irish Premier Micheál Martin has described the destruction as unprecedented. We know that one man died in Ireland after a falling tree hit his car. Those power companies are now working to reconnect homes and businesses. And as the worst of storm Eowyn has now passed there are still weather warnings in place for strong winds and heavy rain as that cleanup now begins. Anna Cunningham, CBC News, London.
