Since January 2025, nearly 600 people—many fleeing conflicts in Sudan, South Sudan, and the DRC—have entered Uganda each day. Among them are thousands of children, many unaccompanied, who dream of continuing their education despite the overwhelming challenges.

The education sector is under significant pressure, with overcrowded classrooms making it difficult for teachers to supervise and support students effectively. Many students are forced to sit outside during exams due to lack of space.

Volunteer teachers, many of whom are refugees themselves, have raised concerns for the youngest and most vulnerable arrivals, especially as emergency funding is expected to run out soon. The UN agency has called for urgent international support to prevent children from dropping out of school and facing additional risks such as malnutrition and violence.

Because as a teacher you are teaching, you need to move between the children to check whether they are very attentive. But this one has not been easy because of the congestion in the class. And when it comes time for exam, all of them come and you find they sit even outside on the verandas to write their exams. So congestion in class is really an issue. Volunteer teacher Abdullah, himself is a refugee from Sudan, expressed concern for the youngest arrivals. As emergency funds run dry by September, the agency is calling for immediate action to protect the most vulnerable. I came without families. They have no money, as they say. They have no relatives with them. They are still very young. They are unlike me. I am an old man. I can do my things. But for them, they need to be guided by someone. Yes. So I pity them. It's sorrowful. But still I say God will help them. God is helping you and helping all of us. The UN agency wants that without urgent international support, children risk dropping out of school, facing malnutrition and exposure to violence.
