Zohran Mamdani, originally from Uganda and a democratic socialist, has been elected as New York City's new mayor. He is the first Muslim to hold the office and will also be the city's youngest mayor in more than a century, officially taking office on January 1st.

In his victory speech, Mamdani highlighted his commitment to supporting immigrants and marginalized groups, and directly addressed US President Donald Trump, who had previously threatened to withhold federal funding if Mamdani won. Mamdani emphasized that New York will remain a city built and led by immigrants.
