Authorities evacuated around two million people to shelters, suspended public transport, closed schools and businesses, and cancelled hundreds of flights. Emergency services rescued vulnerable residents, and the government has pledged $50 million for recovery efforts. As Ragasa weakens and moves west, experts warn that climate change could lead to more frequent and intense typhoons in the region.

In the technology hub of Shenzhen, residents began leaving their homes after being warned to stay indoors since Tuesday. I feel the typhoon was really huge. Afterwards, I realized it was even bigger than I imagined. In Zhuhai City, emergency workers rescued elderly residents from flooded villages. Powerful waves pounded the coastline. Some living in high-rise apartment buildings were evacuated ahead of time. Authorities moved around two million people to shelters to wait out the storm. Public transport, schools and businesses were suspended, and hundreds of flights cancelled. Boats were secured or relocated, and those living and working in outlying islands were transported to the mainland. Ragasa is the world's most powerful tropical cyclone this year. Experts say global warming is increasing the frequency of typhoons in Asia. You should expect more super typhoons, not only to hit the South China coast, but maybe even other parts of Asia. The Chinese government says $50 million will be spent on rebuilding and clean-up efforts. Millions of people are breathing a sigh of relief. With Ragasa weakening and moving westwards, the worst brought by the so-called King of Storms is over.
