A standoff at a Brownsville apartment in Brooklyn led to the deaths of two men and left a 25-year-old NYPD officer, Sargel Juarez, injured by gunfire. The incident began when police responded to a shooting and found 41-year-old Leroy Wallace dead outside the building, followed by an exchange of gunfire with a gunman who later barricaded himself inside an apartment.

Police used a drone to locate the armed suspect, who was found dead with a rifle at his side. Officer Juarez was treated and released from the hospital, while two other officers and a civilian were injured in a car crash en route to the scene. Authorities continue to investigate as the area remains secured by police.

Yeah, Marcy, a major sigh of relief for the department is that 25-year-old officer was released here from Brookdale Hospital earlier this afternoon. Let's get straight to that video. You can see here him being released from Brookdale Hospital, surrounded by dozens of NYPD officers, his family and friends. That is 25-year-old Sargel Juarez, who has been with the department for four years and assigned to the 73rd Precinct. Police say this all started just before 6 o'clock this morning on Thomas S. Boylan Street, just off Linden Boulevard. Police say EMS found a 41-year-old Leroy Wallace on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound, and when officers arrived, they found a single gunshot casing in the lobby of the apartment building. About an hour later, a man came out of the first-floor apartment and shot at officers, hitting Wallace on the left side of his face. Police say officers exchanged gunfire, hitting the gunman, and that's when that gunman barricaded himself into the apartment. Investigators breached the front window and flew a drone into the apartment, where they say that they saw the gunman on the ground with a gunshot wound and a rifle next to him. So far, police have not released the name of that gunman. As far as 25-year-old Wallace, again, we're told that he was shot on the left side of his face as he responded to the 911 call earlier this morning. He was now taken here, released from the hospital earlier this afternoon, and was taken back home. He is shot on the left side of his face, again, 25 years old, four years with the NYPD, currently assigned to the 73rd Precinct. As far as that 41-year-old man who was found outside of the building, we're told that he was in some sort of dispute with a neighbor when he was shot and found dead on the sidewalk. Again, police also say that two other officers were hurt as they were in a car crash while on their way to the scene. We're told that those two officers, as well as the driver of the other vehicle, are expected to be okay. That is the latest here from Brookdale Hospital. Tim Harfman, News 12. Thanks so much, Tim. And take a look. This was the firearm recovered at the scene. Police used drone technology to fly in through a window where they found this gun alongside that gunman who was dead on the ground. The man is believed to have turned himself in. And let's head out now to News 12's Karina Gary. Now, she's at the scene of the shooting alongside Thomas Boylan Street. Karina, what can you tell us about your surroundings right now? Yes, Marcy, it's still a fairly active scene here on Thomas Boylan Street. As you can see here behind me, the police tape continues to block residents from entering the road as crime scene unit investigators, as well as the medical examiner's office, is on the scene now collecting evidence. But it was an even crazier scene here just a few hours ago. Early in the morning, I'm hearing helicopters over my house and I see come out. I rushed out my house, I see a lot of commotion. Dozens of officers descending on and around Thomas Boylan Street and Linden Boulevard. After two officers were shot at. It was just canvassing, looking, investigating, trying to get cameras and all that. Then I heard shots and I heard the cops running and scattering and I heard cop cars flying over here. When I came. Cops originally on the scene around six this morning. That's when police say they found the body of 41-year-old Leroy Wallace. He was found with a gunshot wound to the chest. I see what's going on. I see a dead body outside the building and it was very surprising. It's a very traumatizing event. They say they believe he was shot inside 1046 Thomas Boylan. The super of the building tells me the man who was shot was a tenant. He says he was notified about the shooting over the phone. I just got here to see for myself. I'm here every day. And just now, the medical examiner's office removing two bodies from the scene. We'll make sure to keep you updated as more information becomes available.
