When Hamas attacked the Nova music festival on Oct. 7, 2023, Gal Dalal was able to escape — but his brother Guy has been held hostage in Gaza ever since. And while a new U.S.-brokered release plan is giving Gal new hope, the two years of fighting to free his brother have him rethinking what he believes in.

The Dallal family, along with others, has campaigned relentlessly for the hostages' release, sharing images and stories to raise awareness of their plight. Diplomatic efforts continue, with hopes pinned on ongoing talks in Egypt, but the situation remains tense and unresolved for the families affected.

Two brothers went to the Nova music festival — only one came back

We want to take his time to start his healing process. Gal Dallal has been talking for two years straight. When the shooting started it was from all around us and I couldn't go back to him. What a toll that takes. Every minute focused on his baby brother Guy Dallal now 24 years old. One of just 20 hostages still believed to be alive in Gaza. Do you feel like this is about to end? That he's about to come home? This act that President Trump has did forced everyone to see things how they are. Hamas can't manipulate the deal anymore. I think we never were so close to having a deal but also if we won't have a deal now I think that the hostages that will be in great risk. Worrying about his brother delays worrying about himself. That's the two of them at the Nova Music Festival at 6.15 a.m. October 7th, 2023. Minutes later, Hamas attacked. The brothers ended up in two cars. Where exactly were you the last time you saw him there? We got stuck in different parts of the traffic and when the shooting started they came from all around us and I couldn't go back to him and I couldn't find him and he didn't even answer me. And that's, yeah. So me and him were separated pretty early in the morning after the alarms went off. Gal took off running. A stranger happened to take this photo at around 9 a.m. That's Gal and his horrified friends. From above you could see where we left our cars bringing up smoke. So this is where we left our cars and we went down and then they shot RPGs on us, you see. So you could see the smoke. They were so close. Yeah. Our luck was that they couldn't go down the valley with their cars. Like thousands of others, Gal ran for hours. Only when he was safe did his family tell him Guy had been taken by Hamas along with Eviatar David. The two young men, friends since they were little kids. The last glimpse the families had was from a video shot by Hamas. Even if you don't know him and seeing someone frightened so much don't understand what happened to him how it happened to him. He was so frightened and confused. That was just, you know, unbelievable for me not just to watch it but to really understand that it's really going on. That's what happened. So began a two-year horror the push from the hostage families in Israel is wrenching and relentless. They talk of it all the time. Wonder if the rest of the world understands the agony of the wait and the cruelty of watching hope get snatched away. Just as it was the last time hostages were freed in February. These pictures shot by Hamas including this photo of Guy and Eviatar. In this video, we can see Guy and Eviatar sitting in a van watching their best friends being released and they were forced to watch the hostages that being released on that day. And then they were taken back to the tunnels where they stayed for 10 months before the video. As unbearable as it is for him and the families to see the hardest of images he's scared not enough people see them. You want people to see it, right? Or do you not want people to see it? Of course, of course I want. I mean, not seeing it it's like you don't want to see the truth. Two years of trying to save his brother has him rethinking what he believes in. And I always believed in peace. And yet I still know for sure that no hostage would have returned without putting the military pressure. The diplomatic pressure that Israel can put on Hamas is very limited. How to end this without more death is what the promise of talks in Egypt are all about. Every hope left is riding on them.
