The bodies of two people have been recovered after a container ship crashed into a bridge in the city of Baltimore. Divers are trying to find the bodies of four other people who fell into the water when the bridge collapsed. Authorities have recovered the ship's black boxes and say a full investigation could take up to two years to conduct.

Two bodies recovered from bridge disaster in Baltimore

At sunrise, the dive teams resumed their search, the smooth surface of the river concealing the hazardous conditions below, and the first bodies were found. Shortly before 10 a.m., divers located a red pickup truck submerged in approximately 25 feet of water in the area of the middle span of the bridge. Divers recovered two victims of this tragedy trapped within the vehicle. Four victims remain unaccounted for, but all have been identified. In coordination with our FBI partners, we've determined the countries of origin of those that are presumed deceased to be Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras. The notifications to these individuals' family members and loved ones outside of the United States is being handled by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in accordance with their established protocols. We will use every resource to bring them a sense of closure. We think that's important, and we think these families have earned it. Radio exchanges made public indicate a dispatcher had sought to warn the workers filling potholes on the bridge. We have a crew up there. You might want to notify whoever the foreman is, see if we can get them off the bridge temporarily. The warning did not come in time. The whole bridge just fell down. The whole bridge just collapsed. Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board again boarded the ship and began the process of interviewing the 21 members of the crew and the two pilots who had been on board. Our entire focus on scene is to collect the perishable evidence. That's documenting the scene, it's taking photographs, it's taking any sort of electronics or components, whatever goes away once the scene is cleaned up. We need to collect that information for investigation. The NTSB says it will release a preliminary report within a month, but the final conclusions will take between one and two years.
