Police detained cartoonist Dogan Pelopon and two others, with authorities stating that six people in total are under investigation. Leman issued an apology, explaining that the cartoon aimed to highlight the suffering of a Muslim man killed in Israeli attacks, with no intent to insult Islam. The incident comes amid ongoing concerns about press freedom in Turkey, which is ranked 158th out of 180 countries in the 2024 Press Freedom Index by Reporters Without Borders.

Video from social media showed Islamist groups Monday evening marching to Le Mans offices in Istanbul, chanting God is the only deity in Turkish, as well as other slogans, and eventually kicking its entrance doors. Turkey's interior minister shared a video on X showing police officers detaining cartoonist Dogan Pelopon. He later posted two other videos showing two other men being forcibly taken from their homes. Turkey's justice minister said an investigation had been launched and that detention orders had been issued for six people in total. In a statement on X, Le Mans apologized to readers who felt offended and said the cartoon had been misunderstood. It said Pelopon had sought to highlight, quote, the suffering of a Muslim man killed in Israeli attacks and that there was no intent to insult Islam or its prophet. Turkey's ranking for freedom of expression is consistently low, reflecting significant restrictions on media and public discourse. Reporters Without Borders ranks Turkey 158th out of 180 countries in its 2024 Press Freedom Index.
