Shares in the parent company of former President Donald Trump's social media platform Truth Social soared in its first hours on the Nasdaq stock exchange. After opening with a market valuation of nearly $7 billion, shares for Trump Media & Technology Group Corp. (DJT) surged by more than 40% in the first two hours of trading to about $70 per share.

Let's get to where this new stock that debuted this morning is trading, Carolyn, on the Nasdaq. As we speak, this is from Yahoo Finance. You see on your screen it's at more than $69 a share. As you said, as soon as the market opened around 9.30 this morning, we saw the value of this stock shoot up by more than 50% at one point. In fact, it was so volatile in the early minutes of trading that trading was paused for a brief period of time. And they do this when a stock is extremely volatile. Now the former president owns 79 million shares of this newly merged company. The merger finalized on Friday. So if you were to do just a little math there, that means the value of his stock, roughly as we speak, is about $5.5 billion. That though, it's important to know, is just on paper because as part of this deal to merge these companies together, you had Trump Media, which is the parent company of Truth Social, and then Digital World Media, which was an already publicly traded company. Part of the deal was that the former president wouldn't sell any of his shares for at least six months. So even though, as we speak, technically about $5.5 billion, the value of the stock he's holding, he can't sell it as of yet. Now the new board that runs this newly merged company, they could grant a waiver if he asks for that. That's part of this story that we'll be following today as it plays out, because the former president, as we talked at length yesterday, he still has a $175 million bond that he needs to post now in less than 10 days, along with lawyer fees and some of the other bills that the former president is facing as his legal troubles play out. And he continues to fund a presidential campaign.
