President Trump has launched a new effort to sell his economic plans to Americans. He told the crowd in Pennsylvania last night that things are actually doing really well, going great. And if they aren't, it's the Democrats' fault. Right now, he is not polling well on the economy. One of his signature issues. Ed O'Keefe is at the White House, as he often is. Ed, good morning. Tony, good to see you. It was supposed to be focused mostly on the economy, but the president's speech last night also included several attacks on Democratic lawmakers and immigrants, a potential preview of how he'll campaign for Republicans next year. He tried convincing Americans he understands concerns about rising prices, but insisted the economy is strong. I have no higher priority than making America affordable again. That's what we're going to do. President Trump used his first campaign-style address in months to tout his economic wins and blame Democrats for failing to address inflation during Joe Biden's presidency. They gave you high prices. They gave you the highest inflation in history. Inflation we're giving you, we're bringing those prices down rapidly, lower prices, bigger paychecks. Government data does show the inflation rate had been falling at the beginning of the year, but began slowly rising again as the president imposed widespread tariffs. The cost of a gallon of gas is down compared to the same time last year, but it's a mixed bag at the supermarket. Carton of eggs costs less than earlier this year, but the cost of ground beef and coffee is up. Shoppers say they're feeling the pinch in the checkout line. My husband loves cauliflower. That's his favorite thing, but you can't get it, it's $4.99 a pound. In an interview released Tuesday, the president gave himself a rosier assessment. I wonder what grade you would give. A plus. A plus. Yeah, A plus, plus, plus, plus, plus. But voters CBS News spoke to in northeastern Pennsylvania disagree. Truthfully, I think he's very out of touch. He doesn't come from a place of understanding. The economy is not good. I don't see promises being kept. I think there's too much concentration on other countries. A few times last night, the president went back to a common refrain, mocking the Democratic Party's increased focus on affordability, a focus, though, that helped them win a series of recent elections. He again called it a hoax. As you heard there, it's quite a real issue for the voters we spoke to ahead of next year's midterm elections. Gail. All right, Ed, thank you very much.
