In a televised discussion, Democrat strategist Bill Caruso and Republican strategist Angie Wong debated the ongoing U.S. government shutdown. Wong criticized Democratic leaders for demanding increased spending and suggested that Republicans, led by Mike Johnson, are holding firm, with the situation potentially continuing until military pay is affected. Caruso noted that while Democrats have legitimate concerns about healthcare spending, the shutdown strategy is problematic and ultimately, Republicans currently control the process, but bipartisan cooperation is necessary to resolve the impasse.

The conversation also briefly addressed U.S. diplomatic efforts in the Middle East, with mention of President Trump sending an envoy to Egypt for negotiations related to hostages. There was cautious optimism about a potential deal, but uncertainty remained about whether a true peace agreement could be reached.

All right, joining us now, Bill Caruso, Democrat strategist and attorney. Also with us, Angie Wong, Miami GOP committee woman and Republican strategist. Welcome to you both. Happy Monday. Good morning. Good morning. You guys are matching. We're kind of matching. So we're all coordinated today. Let's see if we're on the same page with respect to the Schumer shutdown. I'll start with you, Angie. I know, I think we'll be on the same page. What can be done to get the government open again? And what are your thoughts on the so-called Schumer shutdown? What can be done is that Democrats can stop complaining that Mike Johnson's not returning their phone call and actually get to work. Look, they're demanding $1.5 trillion in new spending in trade for just seven more weeks for negotiating a budget. This is completely unreasonable. But here's the problem. Schumer and Jeffries, they don't have an off-ramp, really. They kind of back themselves into a corner where all they have is we want more, more, more. But they're not actually giving any sort of reasonable leeway as to why they want more. And they really thought that they can win this one, but they don't have an off-ramp. I think that's what they're looking for this week, because they can't keep going on and on this week on the same message that they did last week, which is we just want more, especially when it comes to funding illegals and Medicaid, et cetera. So right now, that's what they're looking for. I'm happy Mike Johnson has told the House to basically take a break. They're doing their district work this week. So yeah, I suspect this will go on a little bit longer. Many are looking at eyeing the date October 15th. That's when the military stops getting their paychecks. So I think that's perhaps as long as President Trump will let this go. Bill, let's talk about the politics of the situation at this point. I mean, why now, especially with Democrats coming into this, their polling, congressional polling, I think, or national polling, where their brand is down over decades or a decade low. So why are the Democrats doing this at this point? Well, listen, there's a couple of things here. First of all, I'm not sure that the American public and the voting public, there's two separations there, really have differentiated between who to blame here. Congress has an all-time low approval rating. And Democrats continue to win, by the way, in the off-year elections, and we'll see what happens in these gubernatorial elections. So the brand is sour, but we keep winning, so make it make sense. I disagree with this strategy, and so I will come around to agree here. I think that the Democrats have a legit point on these health care spends, on the Obamacare premiums. These are things that are going to hurt every American, not illegal aliens, Americans. And that is a fight worth fighting. But this is a stupid way to do it, shutting down government and allowing the president at the bully pulpit to just continue to bludgeon Democrats over this. And then, by the way, the mainstream media coming along, voting for the CR at Biden spending levels is the smart move. And then taking the issue to force the Republicans to explain why they won't extend health care benefits to American citizens going into the midterms would be so much more strategic. But here we are. One thing I disagree with, though, the Republicans control everything right now. So regardless of what happens here, they're going to need Democrats to get this done. We'll see what happens in the coming days. We're starting to see senators starting to shave on whether that happens. But President Trump has no power to fix this right now unless he decides to cave and go along with the Democrats want. So we're at a stalemate here. It's really going to depend on who blinks first. Yeah, exactly. And it is a separation of powers issue because the president, if he doesn't have the funding, can't go through with the policies. But he can furlough a second significant amount of individuals who maybe should not be there, Tom. So it actually could help overall GDP and our government's efforts in the long term. Angie, quick reaction to we've been hearing reports out of Israel. And of course, today is such an important day for the negotiations. I would love to get your perspective as to where you think we stand right now with respect to getting the hostages home and the next few days, what will unfold. Yeah. And President Trump has sent his very trusted envoy to Egypt to finalize these negotiations. Secretary of State Marco Rubio came out yesterday saying, well, you know, we're close to a deal, but he doesn't know if it's necessarily a peace deal just yet. And, you know, so right now we're going to see probably by the end of today, if we're going to see a ceasefire or a real peace deal, a real peace deal would involve Hamas demilitarizing, would involve them also disarming. And I don't know if we're there yet, but, you know, what they have agreed upon, at least in words, is that they're going to return the hostages home and hopefully reunite them with their families. Well, unfortunately, we have to leave it there, but couldn't agree with you more. We're all praying for the hostages safe return. Bill Caruso and Angie Wong, thank you both for joining us.
