Former U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated that Iran might join the Abraham Accords, which are normalization agreements between Israel and several Arab nations. However, policy experts note that while Iran and Israel had strong relations before the 1979 Iranian Revolution, the current Islamic Republic's leadership maintains a staunchly anti-Israel stance.

Jason Brodsky, policy director at United Against Nuclear Iran, emphasized that as long as Iran's current regime remains in power, normalization with Israel is highly unlikely. He pointed out that the Supreme Leader of Iran holds an ideological opposition to Israel, making any shift toward joining the Abraham Accords improbable.

There's been much speculation over who might be ready to join the Abraham Accords, but Iran hasn't been top of the contenders when it comes to normalization deals. Your thoughts, then, on the U.S. president's comments? Well, it's great to be with you. Look, I think there's a very long and rich history between the Iranian people and the state of Israel. In pre-revolutionary Iran, under the Shah, there were very strong relations between Israel and Iran. The Shah's ministers and later memoirs published about those intimate relationships with the state of Israel. There were covert visits by then-Israeli Prime Ministers Golda Meir and Yitzhak Rabin. So there is no reason why the Iranian people and Israel should be enemies. But the problem has always been the Islamic Republic. And as long as the Islamic Republic is in power, I don't think it's on the menu for Iran to join the Abraham Accords, sadly. The supreme leader has an ideological mindset that is premised on the eradication of the state of Israel, and that is not going to change. He will not be swayed by arguments that it could make the lives of his people better. He's been reigning in Iran since 1989, and he is not going to be moved by those kinds of arguments.
