Bipartisan support is growing in the Senate for new sanctions on Russia, bolstered by President Trump's tentative backing, to pressure Putin amid the Ukraine conflict.

Bipartisan support is increasing in the US Senate for a new package of sanctions targeting Russia, as lawmakers seek to pressure President Vladimir Putin over the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Senator Lindsey Graham and others have indicated that President Trump is tentatively backing the effort, though he has not made a definitive public statement.

Senate leaders expect the sanctions bill to be considered soon, with the aim of strengthening the US position and encouraging Russia to negotiate. The proposed legislation has support from both Republicans and Democrats, and if passed, would give the President additional tools to respond to Russian actions.

with substantial new sanctions is gaining some momentum in the Senate. This after Senator Lindsey Graham signaled that President Trump is now on board. Scripps News Congressional Correspondent Nate Reid is live for us on Capitol Hill. And Nate, we've kind of seen this song and dance before, but it does feel like there might be a little bit more momentum for it. What's the latest from where you are? Yeah, the momentum definitely seems like it's there, and to be clear, this is not just Republicans, this is also Democrats who are banding together to try and come up with a bill to punish Russia with some difficult sanctions, to make it harder for their economy to function, try and force Putin's hand, possibly to come to the table to end the war in Ukraine. This is in large part because, many senators have acknowledged, President Trump doesn't appear to be making a lot of progress with Russian President Vladimir Putin, and they're trying to empower him, give him a couple more tools in his toolkit to try and get Vladimir Putin to the table and end the ongoing war with Ukraine. Earlier today, Senator Lindsey Graham told us exactly why he feels that now is the right time, and reiterated that he believes that he has support to get this thing across the finish line. Take a listen. Putin is pounding key. He hit hard last night. You had a NATO jet scrambled. Putin is really very aggressive, very provocative, and China's watching. So we've got to stand up to Putin and make it harder on him, not easier. July is going to be the magic month for bone-crushing sanctions on Vladimir Putin. He better get ready, because his economy, already on its heel, is going to be hit hard by these sanctions that I anticipate we will adopt very soon in the United States Senate. We are very close. And earlier today, Senate Majority Leader John Thune, on the Senate floor, said that he believes that Russian sanctions could come up this work period, meaning before the month of August, where the Senate could take the motion of trying to pass something into law. They would tee up action for the House of Representatives, see if they're willing to bring something up for a vote as well. Obviously, send that to Trump's desk and try and give him the power to try and exact more punishing sanctions on the Putin regime and allow Russia to hopefully come to the table, ending the war with Ukraine. At this point, it doesn't seem like it's going to happen this week, but it definitely seems like there is a fair amount of momentum, Andrew. All right, so Nate, we just heard from two senators on both sides of the aisle who are pro-sanctions on Russia. Any arguments going on against further sanctions against Moscow? What's interesting is that there appears to be a lot of support here, and it almost seems like the people who are against this might be a bit more outspoken than those who are for it. I caught up with Senator Mark Wayne Mullen. He's a frequent conduit to Republican leadership, to President Trump, to the House of Representatives. He told me that he believes that this has the momentum it needs to get across the finish line. Take a listen. On Russia's sanctions, where are you? I support it wholeheartedly. Right now, what we're doing is, I was a co-sponsor of it, worked closely with Lindsey Graham on it. The policy's correct. Right now, we're wanting to make sure the timing's right. Do you get the sense that most other Republican senators are on the same page as you in terms of sanctions? I think it's heavily bipartisan. It's not just Republicans. It's Democrats, too, that supports moving forward with sanctions. As I said, when it comes to foreign policy, President Trump is absolutely the best at it. You see that. You see world leaders respecting him, wanting to have relationships with him. So one thing we don't want to do is get our foreign policy ahead of the President and the White House. And, Andrew, the one thing that we always have to account for up here is the Trump factor, whether President Trump will weigh in, asking Republican senators to either pump the brakes on sanctions or get a move on with the package. Again, the President has kind of stayed on the sidelines here. He's intimated that he might be okay with Congress passing a sanctions bill. But at the same time, we haven't heard straight from him that he wants the sanctions bill on his desk by a certain date. Obviously, that could certainly cause the timeline here on Capitol Hill to move up quite a bit. But as you heard, the Senate Majority Leader saying that he wants this thing on the floor before the month of August. And Nate, those comments by Trump the other day were also interesting, saying that Putin is nice all the time, but his words are essentially meaningless. Thank you for that update.
