However, Trump did not provide robust evidence for this claim, and medical experts have strongly disagreed, stating that there is no established causal relationship between acetaminophen use during pregnancy and autism.

Large-scale studies, including research published in JAMA, have found no strong evidence linking acetaminophen to autism or other neurodevelopmental disorders. The company that manufactures Tylenol and the Society of OBGYNs in Canada both maintain that the medication is safe for use during pregnancy when taken as recommended. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration also clarified that no causal link has been established. Trump also called for renewed investigation into the debunked theory connecting vaccines and autism, which experts have repeatedly discredited.

Trump makes unproven link between autism, acetaminophen

They are strongly recommending that women limit Tylenol use during pregnancy unless medically necessary. Without citing robust evidence, the Trump administration made an unproven tie between autism and acetaminophen, the active ingredient in drugs, including Tylenol. We know for a fact that it is not the cause of the vast majority of kids with autism. A chorus of experts disagree with Trump, saying there is no single cause to autism. They say a variety of factors are likely involved, like genetics, environmental exposures or even an illness during pregnancy. There are many different versions of autism, they have different biologies, they are caused by different things. Experts are pointing to robust studies like this one, published last year in JAMA. Researchers studied 2.5 million kids in Sweden, looking into a variety of potential causes. There is no strong evidence to support that acetaminophen during pregnancy causes autism or ADHD or any other neurodevelopmental disorder. A statement from the company that makes Tylenol says, We believe independent, sound science clearly shows that taking acetaminophen does not cause autism. We strongly disagree with any suggestion otherwise. It's really not based on evidence. The Society of OBGYNs in Canada also responding to Trump's announcement, saying Tylenol is one of the only painkillers proven safe in recommended doses for those expecting. Not treating pain or fever can harm the mother and child. Pregnant women shouldn't feel guilty about using the medication, they shouldn't feel guilty if they did use the medication. Shortly after the announcement, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration sent out a letter to doctors across the country, warning about pregnant women taking Tylenol. But it also countered what Trump said, stating there is no established causal relationship between autism and Tylenol. And Jennifer, as I understand it, vaccines were also brought up in this announcement. Yeah, Trump called for researchers to re-examine a thoroughly debunked link between vaccines and autism. Medical experts have been studying this. It's been thoroughly discredited as a theory. Today's press conference was more of the Trump administration's push on anti-vaccine messaging than we've seen in recent months. All right. Thank you.
