The Trump administration has stated that the operation targets drug traffickers, but Venezuela has responded with a large-scale troop deployment and placed its military on high alert.

The international community has expressed concern over the escalation, with the U.K. and Colombia suspending intelligence sharing with the U.S. due to questions about the legality of the strikes. Meanwhile, U.S. lawmakers have attempted, unsuccessfully, to limit the president's actions regarding Venezuela.

This is a U.S. warship and it's focus for the world's attention this morning because the aircraft carrier USS Gerald Ford is sailing with three more warships and dozens of warplanes closer to within striking distance of Venezuela. It's the latest move in an increasingly aggressive posture that the White House is taking towards the Venezuelan regime. Willie Lowry joins us now from Washington with more on this. So Willie, the Trump administration says this is all about combating drug traffickers, but it's naturally being met with a lot of resistance and some strong response from Venezuela. What are you seeing? It absolutely is. So on the surface, this appears to be a classic case of saber rattling. Venezuela responding to the arrival of that USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier into the region with its own show of force. Nicolas Maduro ordering a massive, massive troop deployment, nearly 200,000 soldiers as the country is on high alert and he says Venezuela is ready. And this is all really been building since early September when the U.S. started striking alleged drug boats in the Caribbean. To date, it's launched 19 of these strikes, killing at least 75 people. Now, President Donald Trump says it's all about keeping Americans safe and drugs out of the country, but he's also publicly toyed with the idea of regime change in Venezuela. The U.S. State Department has a $50 million reward out for Maduro. It views the longtime Venezuelan president as an illegitimate leader and a cartel member. Maduro has accused Trump of inventing a new eternal war. And with the arrival of the world's largest aircraft carrier, tensions only going to get higher. And as always with a situation like this, Willie, it's not just the two players involved responding, reacting, watching. What are we hearing from other countries? That's right. So the international community is on high alert. The U.K. has reportedly suspended intelligence sharing on drug boats in the Caribbean with the U.S. Of course, they're incredibly close allies, both members of that Five Eyes intelligence unit that includes Canada. And it's a move that really suggests that the U.K. is concerned by the legality of these U.S. strikes. And they're not alone. Colombia, an important South American ally, says it's suspending intelligence sharing with the U.S. until these strikes stop. In a message on social media, President Gustavo Petro said, quote, the fight against drugs must be subordinated to the human rights of the Caribbean people. And it's not just the international community. Democratic lawmakers also concerned they've pushed so far unsuccessfully for Congress to try and rein in the president. Willie Lowry in Washington.
