A joint G7 statement covered various global challenges but did not mention tariffs or trade issues.

Marco Rubio, the U.S. Secretary of State in Hamilton, Ontario, after meeting with Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand and G7 counterparts in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario. We heard Rubio saying he was asked a number of times about the Venezuelan strikes on drug boats. He said, no one raised it with me. And the EU doesn't get to determine U.S. national security. He also was condemning the escalation of violence in Sudan, which was echoed by other G7 counterparts. And earlier, we heard from the Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand. The CBC's Marina von Stackelberg has been listening, and she joins us live in Ottawa. So Marina, do you want to go back to what the Foreign Affairs Minister had to say? Yeah, sure. And we were listening in there because Marco Rubio might have gotten a question about trade with Canada, but the press traveling with him are the only ones there asking questions. So the main Canadian media as a press corps are not there asking questions of the U.S. Secretary of State. But they did get a chance to ask questions of Canada's Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand, asking her, did you have any conversations, any talk at all with Marco Rubio about resuming trade talks? And we know that those have been off since last month, when Donald Trump became very upset about a commercial that Ontario ran, an anti-tariff commercial that Ontario ran in the United States. And since then, talks have not resumed. So Anand was asked a few times about that by reporters. She said that, essentially, this fell within the purview of Dominic Leblanc, the minister responsible for that file. And, you know, she was again asked, well, you had a one-on-one with him. Reporters were told it was about a 40-minute conversation, and so why would you not take the opportunity, especially when this is the first chance, really, of officials of your sort of capacity to be speaking one-on-one privately about this? And she said that she maintained the Canadian interests and positions on a number of serious issues that represent issues for Canadians, talking about Ukraine, Haiti, and really said that that was kind of her focus in those conversations, and that she was respectful of her colleagues, her colleagues' portfolios. And then we heard my colleague Rafi Bouchikhanian push back on that a bit and say, well, officially, yeah, neither of you are the face of this, but this is the first time that you would have a chance. Why not take it to talk to him, say, you know, have my boss call your boss? And she said, you know, we are building relationships with the United States on a number of issues and are continuing on a path together on these issues, and said that diplomacy doesn't happen on a specific timeline, saying these are complex international issues. So didn't outright say, no, we didn't talk about it at all. But she definitely didn't say, yeah, I definitely brought it up. Yeah, exactly, OK. And then very quickly, she also said, you know, there are lots of questions on these Venezuelan strikes. And she said, you know, we cooperate with the Americans, but we're not involved. And basically, you know, these strikes kind of happen, and that's for the US to decide, more or less. Yeah, exactly. There was a large joint statement, three pages, that came out from the G7 about all the issues that they talked about, whether it was Ukraine, Gaza, Haiti, Sudan, migration issues. So there were a wide range of issues that they discussed. Doesn't seem like the tariffs or trade were one of them. All right, Marina, thank you. Marina von Stackelberg in Ottawa.
