The summit brought together leaders from ten Southeast Asian nations, with discussions centered on economic integration and formalizing a trade deal with the United States, following recent challenges related to tariffs and negotiations.

Trump's presence was also significant for regional diplomacy, as he sought to support a peace agreement between Cambodia and Thailand after recent violent border clashes. Following the summit, Trump is scheduled to visit Japan and South Korea, where he will meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping to address the ongoing trade war between the US and China.

ASEAN comprises 10 Southeast Asian countries, including manufacturing powerhouses like Vietnam and Thailand. The bloc's biggest success in recent years has been promoting economic integration among members. And this time the summit in Kuala Lumpur is hosting US President Donald Trump, who last attended an ASEAN gathering in 2017. ASEAN member countries' trade has significantly increased over these years, but many of the members have been hit by high tariffs. Member countries will try to formalise a trade deal with the United States. His presence actually means a lot to ASEAN and the member states after the challenges early this year on tariffs and tough negotiations. Having the president at the ASEAN summit means the doors are wide open for ASEAN member states to engage with the United States. At the summit, Trump will also try to position himself at the centre of a potential peace deal between Cambodia and Thailand. An agreement that could end a decades-long dispute over undemarcated points along Thailand and Cambodia's land border. In July this year, dozens of people were killed and about 300,000 displaced during the five-day clashes between the two countries. By involving President Trump and blessing this peace deal, it allows the region to keep him invested, to help him burnish his credibility as a peacemaker. And to them, I think that they see that as a good thing, that the United States is invested in their region. After ASEAN, the US president will travel to Japan. From there he goes to South Korea, where along with the South Korean leadership, he will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping. Global markets will be watching closely to see if the two men can halt the trade war between the world's two biggest economies.
