The summit is seen as a significant attempt to resolve nearly forty years of conflict between the two former Soviet republics, particularly focusing on issues like the Zangazur Corridor, a proposed transport route connecting Azerbaijan's mainland to its enclave via Armenian territory. 

The meeting also serves as an opportunity for Trump to fulfill a campaign promise to act as a global peacemaker. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev previously met in July to work towards a peace treaty. The longstanding dispute over the Nagorno-Karabakh region has resulted in two wars and significant casualties and displacement.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijan's President Ilyam Aliyev met for their first bilateral meeting in July with the aim of finalising a peace treaty. The critical issue of the Zangazur Corridor, a proposed transport route designed to connect Azerbaijan's mainland with its enclave, which borders Turkey via Armenian territory, remains. Armenia and Azerbaijan have been sworn enemies for decades, going to war twice over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region, which has killed and displaced thousands.
