President Trump is considering the announcement of a new health care proposal designed to address rising costs for recipients of the Affordable Care Act, according to a senior administration official. The potential plan comes as enhanced Obamacare tax credits are set to expire at the end of the year, which could result in health care costs more than doubling for approximately 22 million Americans.

Congressional negotiations are ongoing, with Senate Democrats seeking a one-year extension of the subsidies, while Republicans have agreed to a December vote on the matter. It remains unclear if the president's proposal will gain sufficient support in Congress, and no public announcement has yet been scheduled by the White House.

President Trump is expected to sign an executive order on artificial intelligence later today, but a senior administration official says the president could also unveil a new proposal to address rising health care costs for recipients of the Affordable Care Act. Earlier this month, several Senate Democrats voted to fund the government through January after Republicans agreed to hold a December vote on extending enhanced Obamacare tax credits. KFF, a health policy nonprofit, says that these credits expire at the end of the year. The average cost of health care for about 22 million Americans will more than double on January 1st. CBS News White House reporter Willie James in minute joins us now with more. So Willie, what are you hearing from the White House about this potential health care proposal? How would it work? Hey there, Lindsey. Good to be with you. Well, the president looking to certainly get rid of those price spikes that people will see with their health care premiums with Obamacare or what is also known as the Affordable Care Act. And now this plan that the president is calling about would seek to make changes to how some of those premiums work. Democrats are already pushing back and simply saying that they want a clean extension. Remember, that is something that they proposed to end the government shutdown a clean extension for a year, and then they could work out the changes to the program down the road. So it's unclear if the president's proposal will garner enough support in Congress to move forward, but clearly this would be a significant moment for this president and it's a significant moment for this president in pitching a solution to fix the health care subsidy problem that we are approaching at the end of the year. Remember, price spikes and certainly many people around the country will have to deal with those increased premiums, so that is part of the calculus here. Of course, as you mentioned, there will likely be a vote on health care subsidies in the Senate. Unclear if it will pass either the Senate or the House. There seems to be no appetite there, but nonetheless, this is what the president is proposing to lawmakers. Now we haven't seen this announcement be part of the public schedule on the White House just yet, so it's unclear when or if this announcement could happen, but still will be waiting and watching for whether or not the president does indeed talk about this.
