The reversal came after a conversation with San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie, who assured the president that the city was making substantial progress and requested an opportunity to address local issues independently.

Homeland Security and Justice Department officials confirmed that preparations had been underway for a Border Patrol operation targeting undocumented immigrants. However, following intervention from the president, these plans have been canceled, and the resources will be allocated to other regions. Routine immigration enforcement operations continue in San Francisco, focusing on individuals with criminal records.

President Trump announced today he has called off a plan to deploy federal agents to San Francisco following a conversation with the city's Democratic Mayor, Daniel Lurie, in a post on social media, President Trump said that he was told Lurie is making quote substantial progress. He went on to write that the mayor asked him for a chance to turn the city around. Lurie echoed those sentiments in a press conference today, but noted the city is still prepared for all scenarios. In our conversation, the president told me clearly that he was calling off any plans for a federal surge in San Francisco. Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, reaffirmed that direction in our conversation this morning. I also spoke this morning to Attorney General Pam Bondi. She echoed her willingness to partner with our local law enforcement to combat fentanyl and hold drug traffickers accountable. CBS News immigration and politics reporter Camilo Montoya Galvez joins us now. So Camilo, what was the original plan and why did the president change his mind? Well, the Department of Homeland Security sources tell me that the Trump administration did in fact make internal preparations and plans to deploy dozens of Border Patrol agents to the San Francisco area to launch an immigration enforcement campaign similar to what we're seeing in Chicago and what we saw in Los Angeles in the summer. The plan was to send these Border Patrol teams to arrest people who are suspected of being in the country illegally in that region. And a U.S. Coast Guard base was actually prepared to house and stage Border Patrol agents participating in this operation. But the president has since intervened after he says he received calls from friends in San Francisco concerned about a potential federal crackdown there. We know that the president has friends in the tech sector, for example, in San Francisco. And indeed, Homeland Security sources tell me that after that presidential intervention, they scrapped those plans and are now directing those resources and those agents to other locations across the country. What's going to happen next in this? Can they still be deployed? Yes, it's a good question, because the operations in Chicago and Los Angeles continue. There are still Border Patrol teams there and across the country. Routine ICE operations are also happening in San Francisco. They are just mainly targeting people here illegally, but who also have criminal records. That Border Patrol operation has been scrapped, and that would have targeted people who are in the country illegally, irrespective of whether or not they have a criminal record—a record, rather. It would have been a less targeted, more indiscriminate operation. That has been canceled for now. But, of course, the administration could very well reinstate that plan in the coming days or weeks.
