We are learning more about an immigration enforcement operation at MacArthur Park in Los Angeles. It happened yesterday. Heavily armed federal agents and about 90 members of the California National Guard were deployed to the neighborhood, which has a large immigrant population. Officers were on horseback and they moved from one end of the park to another for about an hour. CBS News immigration reporter Camille Montoya Galvez joins us now with more. Camille, thank you very much for being here. Appreciate it. Good morning. I've read some claims that there's MS-13 ties to this park and then other people say, no, it's just a park people enjoy. What's going on with this operation? Well, this was really at its core a show of force by the Trump administration. The operation involved agents from Customs and Border Protection, ICE, and other agencies whose members had been deputized by the Trump administration as federal immigration officers like the DEA, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and they were joined by members of the National Guard, yes, but they are there to protect the ICE agents, the Border Patrol agents who are conducting the immigration arrest, not to apprehend and intercept undocumented individuals. They were deployed by President Trump back in June against the wishes of California Governor Gavin Newsom. And it is really important to note that the Department of Homeland Security has not announced that it actually made any arrests during this operation. But what is crystal clear here is that the administration wants to send a message, and that is that blue cities and Democratic-led states and cities will not stand in its way as it tries to implement this very aggressive immigration agenda. No matter what you think about immigration or immigration enforcement, it's pretty jarring to see Humvees, guys in body armor, horseback, just moving through your city. At a park in Los Angeles. That's right. The Trump administration would argue on the other side of this debate that it is using resources and manpower across the federal government to fix an illegal immigration crisis created by the previous administration, the Biden administration, and that it is working to apprehend people who are dangerous and who have criminal convictions. But as we know, the administration's crackdown has extended to people who are here illegally, yes, but who have no criminal convictions as well. It was also interesting to see that video of Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass on the ground there as well. But we also know, shifting gears here, you have some fantastic new exclusive reporting about the detainees being held at the naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. What can you tell us about what you're learning right now? Well, we can now report that Guantanamo Bay is now housing immigration detainees from 26 different countries and six continents at those facilities at that military base. That is a big change because initially the Trump administration was using that military complex to mainly house Spanish-speaking migrants from Latin America who were awaiting deportation. Now the detainees include people from Europe, countries like the United Kingdom and Romania, African countries like Liberia and Nigeria, and even Asian countries like China and India. And so the administration is trying to project that its immigration crackdown is stretching across nationalities. Officials at the Department of Homeland Security are noting to me that many of these migrants detained at Guantanamo Bay do have serious criminal convictions, including for homicide, sexual offenses, including against children and kidnapping. But I do have to underscore that about a dozen of the detainees there are considered to be low risk, meaning that they have no serious criminal record or any at all. Wow. Camilo, thank you very much.
