Tropical downpours are expected to soak the Gulf Coast region of the U.S. with localized flash flooding, rough surf and even potential tropical development this week from July 22-25.

Meteorologists are monitoring a weather system in the Gulf of Mexico that is producing clusters of showers and thunderstorms. While there is a possibility for the system to develop into a tropical depression or storm, current conditions such as wind shear make significant development unlikely in the short term. 

Regardless of its classification, the primary impact is expected to be heavy rainfall across Gulf Coast states, including areas in Texas such as Houston and Corpus Christi. Residents are also being warned about the risk of rip currents along the central Gulf Coast. The environment is not currently favorable for major tropical development, so rain remains the main concern.

Tropical downpours soaking Gulf Coast states

Alex, we're keeping an eye on one area where there is potential for trouble, whether it becomes a name storm or not. We'll talk about this, but where are we looking right now? Yeah, well, we're going to be looking in the Gulf and off the southeast coast, but mainly the Gulf here over the next couple of days. Tail end of a front, we call that homegrown development, closer to home. Again, typical this time of the year, we're going to have to watch for this little cluster of showers and thunderstorms to move across the Gulf over the next couple of days. And if it can try to develop away from the coast, there is the chance that we could see a tropical depression or a tropical storm. But I think the chances are low, but you can see here, we've been checking off the names here over the last 30 days or so. Andrea, Beryl, Chantel or Barry Chantel. The next name on the list would be Dexter if we see that one. And regarding the timing, we have had a faster than average start, but aside from Chantel, we had a couple of pretty flimsy short-lived systems out there, especially with Andrea and Barry. Yeah, I mean, typically early in the hurricane season, we usually don't see those big, powerful, major hurricanes coming across the Atlantic. Beryl last year was such an anomaly, such a rare occurrence to see a storm of that magnitude that early in the hurricane season. This is more typical what you would see, more tropical storms. And in fact, the first hurricane is actually not typical until the beginning of August. So, you know, of course, we've only seen tropical storms thus far, but the real hurricane season is still weeks away. And you can see the impact from an unnamed storm. It was a tropical rainstorm last week there in Louisiana. So here's the current setup. And Alex, when you look at this satellite loop here, what jumps out at you? Yeah, you can see a bit of a swirl there close to the Bahamas there on the north side of the Bahamas there. This is, I think, the kind of the spin that might initialize, you know, what we're going to be seeing in the Gulf here over the next couple of days. Again, this is the tail end of a front early in the hurricane season, which we still are right now. This is where we would look, usually not looking out towards Africa this time of the year. We're just going to have to monitor this as it comes across here over the next couple of days. It's going to be very similar to the tropical rainstorm we were actually tracking last week. Looks like an overall wet pattern coming. So in some form, at least between the low levels of the atmosphere and upstairs, there are kind of two different fragments to this, at least right now off the southeast coast. Yeah, multiple pieces of energy. This is what we were actually dealing with with the last tropical rainstorm. You had the disconnect between the low-level center and the mid-level center just really couldn't get organized. And I think we could see a similar situation here. There's a lot of wind shear in this area, and so it's going to be hard to get this thing organized, especially in the eastern Gulf. But you know, we play through this loop here, and you can almost see a little bit more of a spin towards the end of the loop here, towards the end of the week. So I think maybe towards the end of the week, it might have a little bit of a better shot. Right now, plenty of wind shear. You can see that denoted by the purple here. So no development here in the short term, I don't think. But I think towards the end of the week, maybe it has a shot if it can get into a pocket of low wind shear. And regardless of its official classification, some of the impacts will involve heavy rain for some pretty populated places. Yeah, indeed. Regardless of development, rain is going to be the primary issue with this, much like the last tropical rainstorm. So while there can be some locally gusty winds, it's going to be rainfall over the next week here, going into those Gulf Coast states and then all the way into Texas. Unlike the last one, which majority of the rain missed out on Texas, we think this one could come further west. And so places like Houston, Corpus Christi, looks like they're going to be getting in on some of the rainfall. But going with a low risk of development for now, again, not the idealized environment for tropical development. So it looks like rain is going to be the primary impact this week. And keep an eye on the swimmers as well. Rip currents, the deadliest weather threat along parts of the central Gulf Coast here, surprising some.
