The initiative, which includes the Alexandra River Creature Series sculptures, is part of a Canadian government-funded effort to rehabilitate approximately 150 kilometers of the city's rivers, including the Jaskay River.

Artists and community members are using materials such as tree trunks removed from the river, which previously contributed to flooding, to create these sculptures. The project has also led to the planting of over 5,000 trees and the rehabilitation of riverside areas, combining environmental restoration with creative expression.

The co-founder of the Alexandra Water Warriors, Paul Mululeke, explains how the river cleaning project has also been a source of materials for the Alexandra River Creature Series sculptures. Fomzila Sisakele is a multidisciplinary artist and member of the Alexandra River Collective. She has been working on tree trunks hollowed out of the Jaskay River. By blocking the river floor, these large pieces of wood have contributed to destructive flooding. I'm having a stress day and whatever and I'm here by the wood and I'm allowed to hit as hard as I want and chop it and damage it and then create something nice out of it. Over 5,000 trees have been planted along the river and the riverside area has been rehabilitated thanks to the part of Sun Cancer project.
