The meeting highlighted Denmark's presidency of the European Council and its focus on tackling illegal migration, with proposals to extend Danish policies—such as confiscating belongings from undocumented migrants and accelerating deportations—to other EU countries.

The officials also considered offering financial incentives for voluntary returns and processing asylum claims in third countries, a practice already in use by Italy. Some of these measures have faced criticism within the EU, but proponents are urging the European Commission to consider expanding them to more member states.

They are referred to as Europe's immigration hawks, and the list of those attending their meetings keeps growing. In June, the German Chancellor joined the group for the first time, next to Giorgia Maloney, Viktor Orban and Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, seen here on the left of Europe's foreign policy chief. Denmark is holding since the beginning of the month the presidency of the European Council, and it has clearly stated its priority, tackling illegal migration. Security is also about migration. A great challenge to the social balance of our societies. We need new solutions to tackle these challenges. The idea is to spread policies already used in countries like Denmark to the rest of Europe to make them more effective. Nine years ago, Denmark passed a law confiscating undocumented migrants' belongings, officially so they can participate in the cost of their stay. Denmark has also accelerated the deportation of undocumented migrants. We must act in a manner that best shields Denmark from the massive pressure that we and all of Europe are under. Denmark has offered some 80,000 euros to Syrian families who accept it to move back to their home country. Another measure is to send undocumented migrants to third countries to process their asylum cases, for example, from afar. A policy criticised by several European countries, but it's already implemented by Italy, which uses several centres in Albania. The bloc's immigration hawks are pressing the European Commission to examine such measures so they would be expanded to other member states.
