A snowstorm has stranded more than 200 trekkers in freezing conditions on Mount Everest's Tibetan side, killing at least one person. Amid hundreds already rescued, severe weather continues to hamper ongoing efforts.

Hundreds of trekkers were stranded nearly 5,000 metres high on Mount Everest when an unexpected snowstorm struck, burying tents and supplies at several campsites. One rescued hiker recalled the struggle to keep tents from collapsing under the weight of snow and the exhaustion from trekking long distances in freezing temperatures. 

Local villagers, along with search and rescue officials, ascended the mountain to assist, using horses and yaks to clear paths and lead trekkers to safety. Despite limited air support due to weather conditions, the rescue operation continued, ensuring the safe evacuation of many who had been trapped.

On the lower slopes of the world's tallest mountain, hundreds of trekkers were trapped nearly 5,000 metres high in an unexpected snowstorm that struck over the weekend. At several tourist campsites, thick snow, buried tents and supplies. At night, when more than a dozen of us gathered in the tent, we realised that roughly every 10 minutes we had to clear the snow off the tent, otherwise the weight would crush it. He says teams did not anticipate heavy snowfall and were completely unprepared. But help soon arrived. Villagers ascended the mountains, along with search and rescue officials, with horses and yaks clearing snow in the way ahead of trekkers, helping lead hundreds to safety. I've never gone through something this difficult before. When you hike for hours and your shoes get soaked, once you stop walking, you immediately feel your body temperature drop. But as soon as you keep moving, you don't notice it as much. So even though we were exhausted yesterday, we tried not to stop completely. We probably walked about 18 or 19 kilometres, mostly through heavy snow. Thankfully, some people ahead of us were breaking the trail, leaving footprints we could follow. That made it a little easier. Otherwise, it would have been impossible to make it out on our own. With cloud and snow limiting air support, and many still stranded in freezing conditions, the rescue mission continued for another day.
