Flash flooding was threatening homes and lives in Lincoln County, New Mexico, the National Weather Service reported Tuesday, after the Rio Ruidoso began to surge over its banks.

Flash flooding in Lincoln County, New Mexico, has caused significant destruction and resulted in three fatalities after monsoon rains triggered the Rio Ruidoso to surge over its banks. Emergency crews responded with at least 85 swift water rescues, with some residents trapped in vehicles and homes swept away by the powerful current. 

The river rose dramatically, reaching 19 feet within minutes during the heavy rainfall. Local authorities described the force of the floodwaters, which damaged infrastructure and left debris scattered across roadways. Efforts to clear debris and account for all residents are ongoing.

On Tuesday, parts of New Mexico were also slammed by flash floods. Three people died after monsoon rains triggered the flood in southern New Mexico. The Rio Rio doso river also rose 19 ft in a matter of minutes during that heavy rainfall. The mayor of Rio doso spoke about how fast that flood came and the sheer power that it brought. It's hard to imagine the power of water and I know you've seen it here before. People have seen what's happened in central texas, burnt county, uh, Kerrville, places like that, just how powerful the water is. But it just snapped some of these big concrete heads off these manholes that goes to the sewer. It just snaps them off. All right. By late last night, though, crews had unbelievably cleared debris from the roadways with some cars left stranded in the mud. The search to make sure everyone is accounted for continues.
