War and neglect have taken on Iraq’s archaeological sites. 
A museum in the southern city of Basra was shut after the Gulf War in 1991. In 2016, its collections were rehoused in a palace that belonged to former leader Saddam Hussein.

This palace in Iraq's southern city of Basra was built for former leader Saddam Hussein. Now it's a museum of antiquities, hosting relics from ancient Mesopotamia. Artifacts on display span several eras and civilisations. Sumerian, Babylonian, Assyrian and Islam. This is the second largest museum in Iraq after the National Museum in Baghdad and it has 4,500 authentic and rare pieces. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism has chosen this palace because of its unique design. The collection includes statues, jewellery and pottery, as well as tablets engraved with ancient lettering. But several monuments were damaged by ISIL in 2014 and 2015. Many of these artefacts were looted and smuggled abroad following the 2003 US-led invasion before being retrieved and brought here. This extravagant palace, which was once home to the leader of a totalitarian regime, is now a platform for all Iraqis and foreign visitors to get to know Iraq's rich cultural heritage. Archaeology professor Lewis Araujo travelled here from Portugal to see ancient items he has studied and admired for most of his life. He regrets that thousands of precious pieces are unaccounted for. The worst part is the smuggling cases that happened after 2003 were only for business, so the stolen pieces are not catalogued, unlike pieces that were smuggled in the 19th century, which were treated and documented. They include priceless artefacts that belong not only to Iraq, but to all humanity. Unfortunately, they have disappeared, they are kind of lost. A library of antiquities and heritage recently opened in the museum. It houses a collection of books and manuscripts on the country's ancient monuments and archaeological sites. The library has a variety of resources on Iraqi history and ancient civilizations. Academics no longer have to travel to Baghdad to access archaeological publications. It also tackles pieces on display here, especially those related to cuneiform studies, as it provides translation to cuneiform texts engraved on pieces.
