LabGenius, a London-based company, has developed an artificial intelligence (AI) robotic system designed to enhance the discovery of cancer-combatting molecules. Traditional methods of hunting for therapeutic antibodies usually require human scientists to analyze extensive data manually. The robotic platform at LabGenius, however, is capable of assembling thousands of DNA constructs, each intended to create unique therapeutic molecules that can be tested in laboratories.

This innovative approach targets the reduction of human involvement, leveraging machine learning to address complex problems without human bias. Traditional cancer treatments often struggle to distinguish between healthy and diseased cells, leading to significant side effects. LabGenius aims to address these limitations by re-engineering therapeutic molecules to selectively target only the diseased cells.

The autonomous lab established by LabGenius can design and conduct experiments, and then learn from the outcomes in a streamlined, circular process. This has allowed the discovery of novel molecules with over 400 times the improvement in selectivity for targeting cancer cells. LabGenius plans to introduce its first therapeutic solutions to clinics by 2027, aiming to transform cancer care significantly. The technology's potential applications extend beyond cancer treatment, possibly even addressing ageing by targeting ageing cells.

Imagine we had the power to tailor the different cells that are in your body by selectively deleting those that are diseased. AI. It's creeping into just about every industry you can think of, even healthcare. And one field that's really benefiting from its use is the discovery of new medicines. We've got here a robotic platform that is currently in the process of assembling thousands of different DNA constructs, each of which encodes a completely unique therapeutic molecule that we'll then test in the lab. This is something that historically would have had to have been done by hand. Many existing cancer treatments come with debilitating side effects, mainly because the treatment struggles to differentiate between healthy and diseased cells. London-based LabGenius re-engineers therapeutic molecules so they can selectively target just the diseased cells. The difference in terms of approach that we take here is we say, let's remove all human bias. Machine learning gives us a new way in which we can grapple with some of these really difficult problems. LabGenius has set up an autonomous lab that's able to design and conduct experiments and learn from them in a circular process that creates molecular antibodies at a rate far faster than a human researcher. We ended up finding is that through the combination of high-throughput experimentation and machine learning, we were able to find completely novel molecules with over 400 times improvement in killing selectivity. What is really novel in their approach is how seamlessly they've connected this list of kits together and make them work very efficiently. So now they have a series of antibodies that look like they can target cancer cells very selectively. That's as good as any results that I've ever seen for this. But at the end of the day, really the proof is in the pudding. It's putting this into a patient and seeing what happens. And that's the next step for LabGenius. They aim to have their first therapeutics entering clinics in 2027. But is there potential for the technology beyond cancer treatment? And if you take one step further, you could think about knocking out senescent cells, so ageing cells, as a way to treat the underlying cause of ageing.
