Thirteen yachts, including one of the five super maxis, have retired from the Sydney to Hobart race after a challenging first night marked by rough weather. Reasons for retirement ranged from rigging issues and seasickness to equipment breakages and a life raft overboard. 

The race is progressing slowly, with the record time not expected to be threatened. As of the latest update, Comanche leads, followed by LawConnect and Scallywag, with only four kilometres separating the top two boats. Arrival in Hobart is anticipated to be about 12 hours later than last year.

The wet and wild ride on night one of the Sydney Hobart has taken its toll, with 13 yachts now retiring from the race, including one of the five super maxis. Brooke East is live at Constitution Dock for us. And Brooke, while it was a rough start to the race, it seems like it'll be a slow but smooth finish. Well, that's the hope, Nat. I don't know if you can tell behind me, it's pretty windy. It's pretty cold. It feels like 10 degrees here in Hobart. So spare a thought for the sailors on the water. I've spoken to one of the owners of the boat who said the first night was pretty wet and wild. Because of that weather, as we go to air tonight, we've had 13 boats retire. Probably the biggest name out of all of them, Wild Thing 100, the super maxi. Now, they had a few rigging issues and are heading back to Sydney. But there's been multiple reasons for why so many boats have had to retire. A few crew members of sea sickness, multiple breakages to boats, a life raft even overboard. Now, it's going to be a pretty slow race because of these first night conditions. The race record is certainly not going to be threatened. We're expecting them here about 3pm tomorrow afternoon, which is about 12 hours after last year's entry time. Now, as we go to air, Comanche is leading ahead of LawConnect and Scallywag in third. LawConnect suffering a few issues, but they say they're still very much in the hunt. This morning, it was super cold. And it was wet because you're getting countered by the waves. It's still pretty rough now. It's still pretty wet and reasonably cold now. When it gets light, it's a whole new race. So I think that what will probably happen, they'll hit the light first. We'll catch right up to them there and it'll be a new race, I think. Now, as we go to air tonight, there's about four kilometres between LawConnect and Comanche. So it's going to be very tight. And as the sailors said, essentially, once the super maxis hit the Derwent, the race almost restarts. So we'll have plenty more in sport of the reaction from the first night on the water.
