The release of Open AI's ChatGPT has accelerated the development of artificial intelligence and warnings about its impact on society.

Hyper-realistic AI-generated news anchors are increasingly appearing in viral videos across social media platforms. While some creators disclose the artificial nature of these anchors, others do not, and disclaimers can be lost as videos are reposted. These AI anchors have been used to report entirely fabricated events, ranging from comical scenarios to dangerous misinformation, such as false reports of celebrity deaths or international conflicts.

The technology behind these videos, such as Google's VO3, allows users to create advanced, synchronized audio-visual content. While some real news outlets are experimenting with AI presenters for verified news, there is growing concern about the use of AI-generated anchors to intentionally spread false information online.

But even if users disclose that the content is AI-generated, once clips spread across the internet, they are reposted by other users on different platforms. Let's go to Joe Braxton, who is live at the border. Many of these videos are created using VO3, which is Google's AI video generation software. VO3 allows users to create 8-second videos which sync audio and video in an advanced manner. More and more real news outlets have also experimented with AI presenters in recent years. They do so either through using anchors that are fully AI-generated, or by asking real people to authorise the use of their image to create such an anchor. However, there is a distinction between channels who are using or hope to use AI anchors to present verified information, compared with AI-generated presenters who are created with the sole purpose of spreading made-up events.
