The Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada says the snowy owl population has gone down by more than 40% in 24 years.

The snowy owl, recognized as Quebec's official bird, has been classified as a threatened species by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada. Over the past 24 years, the snowy owl population has declined by more than 40%, meeting the criteria for the threatened status. 

Experts attribute the decline to a combination of factors, including collisions with vehicles and power lines, habitat changes due to climate change, and a reduction in prey populations. While the snowy owl can still be found across Canada, its continued decline has prompted calls for increased conservation efforts. Quebec authorities are currently reviewing the species' status and considering additional legal protections.

The majestic snowy owl is celebrated as the official bird of Quebec but it's now facing some serious challenges. The snowy owl is being cared by doctors here after he lost his wing. He was rescued by a group that cares for birds of prey after he was caught in a fence. Just one of the many dangers that snowy owls face and that led it to being identified as a threatened species. We see lots of snowy owls hit by cars. They can hit power lines. Other factors include climate change affecting their habitats and a decline in populations of the owl's prey. The snowy owl nests in the arctic and breeds mostly in the tundra but ventures further south to Quebec in the winter. It can still be found in every province and territory in Canada but experts say its population has been steadily declining. Having this conclusion for the snowy owl is just a red flag to say we have to do something. Dr. Guy Fitzgerald participated in a special committee that was in charge of identifying the snowy owl as a threatened species. They noted that for the past 24 years the snowy owl population has gone down by over 40 percent which meets the criteria to classify the species as threatened. It's not endangered but threatened does mean it's in the position of potentially becoming endangered in future so we should be concerned about that. We should all take it as a wake-up call and really start looking in what it really means to try and change the current trends in global warming especially in global warming. But more can be done. The government can grant animals in danger legal protections which could include banning the possession of the animal. The snowy owl isn't on the provincial government's list of threatened species yet but Quebec told CBC that it will be evaluating the status of the bird and its next steps. As for this little guy without his wing he can no longer fly so he will be sent to a zoo or a sanctuary that will care for him.
