One thing's pretty clear here on Capitol Hill. Members of Congress are standing with Israel. Signs like this can be found outside of congressional offices. And while Republicans and Democrats debate the details of another Israeli aid package, one thing is abundantly clear. Throughout history, Congress has repeatedly stood with Israel. Washington's support goes all the way back to 1948, the year the state of Israel was created. That's Harry Truman and the first president of Israel holding a Torah. According to the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service, since World War II, Israel has been the largest recipient of U.S. foreign aid. $158 billion has been allocated from Congress, and that is not adjusted for inflation, mostly for military assistance. In 2016, the Obama administration reached an agreement with the Israeli government to provide at least $38 billion in military aid over 10 years. Congress allowed Israel to be the first international operator of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. Israel has purchased over 50 of these from the U.S. since then. You probably have heard a lot about Israel's Iron Dome recently, the missile defense system that allows it to intercept Hamas' rockets. The U.S. has contributed over $3 billion to help develop it. Parts of it are even made in the U.S. As far as the tunnels in Gaza go, reportedly used by Hamas to protect themselves from Israeli attacks, Congress has given over $300 million so Israel can better map them. As Republicans and Democrats begin voting on the latest Israeli aid package, disagreements loom large, including how much aid should civilians in Gaza, the region Hamas controls and Israel is attacking, get. That made us wonder, how much money has gone to Gaza over the years? In short, substantially less. In fact, some federal laws prohibit tax dollars from flowing to certain Palestinian organizations. However, humanitarian aid is allowed. In the final hours in office in 2017, former President Obama sent $200 million to Palestinians. In 2019, former President Trump halted a similar amount. In 2021, President Biden resumed aid for Gaza, allocating over $5 million, including money for health care. The president has pledged to send $100 million to help civilians in Gaza and the nearby West Bank since the conflict began. And he wants billions more from Congress to allow civilian aid to continue.
