Texas has filed a lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson, the manufacturer of Tylenol, alleging deceptive marketing practices targeting expectant mothers. The state's attorney general claims the company promoted the painkiller despite unproven links between its active ingredient, acetaminophen, and autism when used during pregnancy. 

While some studies have explored a possible connection, both the World Health Organization and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists maintain there is no conclusive scientific evidence supporting these claims. Johnson & Johnson is also accused of restructuring its business to shield assets from lawsuits, but continues to assert the safety of its product.

Texas sues Tylenol makers over alleged autism link

Texas is suing the pharmaceutical companies behind Tylenol, a popular over-the-counter painkiller. The state's attorney general cites unproven links between the active ingredient acetaminophen and autism if taken by pregnant women, an unsubstantiated claim also put forward by U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. in September. Ken Paxton accuses the company behind it, Johnson & Johnson, of deceptively marketing the product to expectant mothers. Big Pharma betrayed America by profiting off of pain and pushing pills regardless of the risks. These corporations lied for decades, knowingly endangering millions to line their pockets. Additionally, seeing that the day of reckoning was coming, Johnson & Johnson attempted to escape responsibility by illegally offloading their liability onto a different company. In 2021, J&J announced that it would turn its consumer health business into a separate company, now known as Kenview. Paxton accuses J&J of doing this to shield assets against lawsuits. Acetaminophen, which is the same as paracetamol, is used by upward of 100 million Americans annually to reduce pain and fever. There have been some studies that looked into the risks of autism while taking Tylenol when pregnant, but the World Health Organization emphasizes that there is currently no conclusive scientific evidence confirming this. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists asserted that the drug is one of the few options available to women to safely take during pregnancy.
