A Texas family who survived the devastating and deadly floods describe waking up in the middle of the night to rising waters inside their home. They told CBS Evening News co-anchor Maurice DuBois how they escaped.

Kyle Ames, his two sons, girlfriend, and mother were awakened by rising water, which quickly reached their necks, prompting them to climb onto the roof for safety. Ames also rescued the family dog during the ordeal. Despite their home being 40 feet above the river, it was destroyed by the floodwaters. The family expressed gratitude for their survival but acknowledged the loss of their possessions and the emotional impact of the disaster, extending condolences to others affected by the floods.

Kyle Ames is picking up the pieces of his life after the Guadalupe River came crashing into his home in Ingram, Texas early Friday morning. I just hear it off the distance, yeah. There's water in the house, daddy, there's water in the house. The kids woke you up? Yeah, and I stepped down and it's, you know, above my knee. Oh my God. And, I mean, it took me a minute to process. Ames, a father of two boys, says when he stepped out of bed, the water was already at his knees. Less than 10 minutes later, it was up to his waist. They were thinking, daddy, are we going to die? Did they say that? Yeah, absolutely. They said that? Oh, yeah. I mean, this is the water line. With the water quickly rising to their necks, his girlfriend, Hannah, and mother, Cindy, said they had to get to the roof and only Kyle could lift them all up there. I was like, all right, mom, I'm going to go underneath. She put her feet on my shoulder and I lifted her up. I helped her get the rest of the way up there. It was, I mean, I can't even. It just happened so quick and it was just instinct. Their dog, Remy, was still in the water. Ames had to dive underwater to get to him. If you're like me, a dog's part of your family. All animals. And I couldn't sit there up on the roof thinking that she's drowning in there. Is your dad a hero? Yes. He sacrificed himself to help someone. Yeah, Ames' family does, bro. Even though Ames' home is 40 feet above the river, everything in his house was destroyed. Ames' girlfriend, Hannah. The hardest part is probably seeing all of your stuff go away, you know? Everything that they grew up with is gone. Ames and his mother say they are trying to salvage what they can, but admit they have survivor's guilt. What do you say to the families who didn't make it, have people who didn't make it? I'm so sorry for your loss. And it's not fair to lose people you love like this, but my heart's with you guys, you know? And God bless.
